In 1982 I started commuting between my home in Springfield, MO and Nashville.  I stayed with my good friend Jon R. Goin, who had moved to Nashville a few years earlier.  Jon and I had begun writing songs together and since at the time Jon was very involved with doing session work, it was then  up to me to do the traveling in order for us to write.

“Call of The Wild” was one of many songs we were working on during this time period and I remember writing its lyrics on one of my frequent drives down to see Jon.  The route I always took was through southern Missouri, where the topography is rolling hills covered with trees with valleys and hollows, each with either a creek, a steam or a  river running through them,  Beautiful in its remoteness, and very inspirational for writing lyrics.

After I finally relocated down to Nashville, “Call of The Wild” was I believe the first recording session I did after my move.  Recorded at The Bennett House with Jon R. on electric guitar, Mike Brignardello on bass, Shane Keister on synthesizer and me adding programed drums with some keyboard pads and vocals. A fun introduction to the Nashville music scene, though not exactly “country music”.

Lyrics

I can hear it calling me from the distant past
It's like a sound that’s carried by the wind – listen
It comes from all directions and it takes your very soul
Awakening instincts from long ago

I have felt drawing me for days and days and days
I’m like an animal that’s in a cage – I listen
And the more and more I hear it, then the more I want to run
Through the woods and out into the sun

     The call of the wild
Pulling at my heart, I’m coming all apart
It’s the call of the wild
Whispering to me, trying to set me free
Yes it’s beckoning to me take this sweet new mystery in my life

I can hear it telling me in some forgotten tongue
I almost lost the vision of the dream – so I listen
And once again I've heard it through the steel and cold concrete
It’s time I got myself off of the street

     The call of the wild
Pulling at my heart, I’m coming all apart
It’s the call of the wild
Whispering to me, trying to set me free
Yes it’s beckoning to me take this sweet new mystery in my life

Solo

It is a sound so strong, yet it’s hard to hear
You think you imagine it, but it’s real

It’s the call of the wild
Pulling at my heart, I’m coming all apart
It’s the call of the wild
Whispering to me, trying to set me free
It’s the call of the wild
Pulling at my heart, I’m coming all apart
It’s the call of the wild
Beckoning to me take this sweet new mystery
     It’s the call…..
